Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
