Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
