Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their 2024 Election Autopsy: An Analysis.

This move from the DNC to block the publication of its own post-election analysis on the last presidential race seems shocking yet not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body behaves closer to a publicity machine than an electoral entity devoted to cultivating a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Culture of Conformity

Hesitant to challenge the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Publishing the findings might have shown that the leadership are interested to promote public discourse about the errors which allowed Donald Trump to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there are no lessons to understand following the tragic debacle of 2024.

The top priority: is this good for winning elections? If not, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented for withholding the document.

Critical Problems a Report Could Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Failing to retain of a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • A Choice to Run: The unwavering choice by the incumbent to run again, coupled with a last-minute step-aside, has been criticized as robbing Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Failing Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the campaign is criticized for ceding to powerful financial backers and not managing to confront the impact of big business.
  • A Gaza Effect: An unwillingness to shift a stance on a ongoing war allegedly caused alienating key demographic groups, notably with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Support: Research demonstrates a huge decline in votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal aligns with a recurring tendency to avoid difficult realities. It echoes an episode in which virtually every Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with a sitting president's determination to running for re-election right up until a disastrous campaign event compelled a change.

At the same time, a significant majority of the electorate were consistently telling pollsters that they opposed that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A thorough autopsy would also investigate matters regarding financial allocations, including the amounts flowed to insider consultants as well as ad buyers over the course of a campaign which expended an enormous sum in a short period.

A Larger Problem

At its core, the suppression of the official autopsy is symptomatic of an allegiance to party leaders responsible for an unsuccessful electoral effort. The message to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not have a right to understand what the insiders have learned based on an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.

A party unwilling to critically review its mistakes finds it difficult to break free from the pattern that ended up being so helpful to their opponents.
